From oldest on down we have Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt, Marta and Gretl (Julie Tabash, Grant Badow, Margaret Pilkington, Grace Pouliot, Cooper Causey, Kaylee Rooks and Lucy Crile.) We come to find out that the von Trapp children go through governesses like water. She sings in the abbey when she is not supposed to, waltzes on her way to mass and whistles on the stairs (sound like a lyric to a song.) Mother Abbess (Maria Zifchak) thinks it would be good for Maria to become a governess and sends her to the home of Captain Georg von Trapp (Troy Cook.) Once there she meets his seven children. Maria Rainer (Katherine Manley) is a nun at Nonberg Abbey and is a bit of a rebel.
That is what I call a fine night of theatre. Wonderful music and voices and mountains wherever you looked as a backdrop. This is indeed a heavy subject to musicalize but Rodgers and Hammerstein never shied away from adult themes in their musicals. Yes, there is the optimistic score and love story between Maria and Captain Von Trapp, but Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse’s entire book is set against the backdrop of the Third Reich’s takeover of Austria. Many people only know the over sappy movie version which sugar coats a few of the darker aspects of the plot. The show I saw the first night of my vacation in Denver Colorado disproves this theory.Ĭentral City Opera’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music reminds us of what the creators of this show originally intended. They are trained to sound pretty and not much else. Many opera companies fail miserably in presenting Broadway musicals because traditionally opera singers cannot act.
